Woman found dead in parked car; man alive
A woman, 26, was found dead in a car parked in a garage for the Riva Pointe Condominiums in Weehawken around 8 a.m. Friday morning.
Weehawken police initially responded to a call from someone who said they saw a man slumped over in the car. The woman was found in the passenger seat along with a 33-year-old man who was slumped over but alive, in the drivers’ seat. County Prosecutor Ed De Fazio said the man is being treated at the hospital and is expected to recover.
“It does not appear to be a homicide,” DeFazio said. He said drugs may have been involved. Neither of the individuals are Weehawken residents and they were apparently visitors at the condos.
Murderer of Bergen County teen sentenced to 50 years
Draymond Coleman was sentenced to 50 years in prison last week, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. It is the maximum sentence for his plea deal in the 2006 murder of Jennifer Moore in the former Park Avenue Hotel in Weehawken. His co-defendant, Krystal Riordan, accepted her own plea deal last week and could face 15 to 40 years in prison when she is sentenced on June 24.
Coleman and Riordan were charged with the 18-year old Moore’s murder after a string of evidence, including video surveillance tapes and cell phone records, incriminated them. When he pleaded guilty, Coleman said that both he and Riordan had sex with Moore before killing her and stuffing her body in a suitcase which was then dumped in a garbage container in West New York.
Prior to her murder, Moore got split up from a friend she had been partying with at a New York City night club and wound up wandering along West Side Highway, where Coleman picked her up and brought her to New Jersey.
The hotel where Moore was murdered has since been demolished and the site is being converted to affordable senior housing.
Bridge deck above Park Avenue near 495 to be reduced to one lane
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced last week that they will begin a $908,000 replacement of the North Marginal Street bridge deck over Park Avenue. North Marginal Street is a one-way connector roadway running parallel to the Route 495 westbound elevated highway leading from the Lincoln Tunnel. The roadway is a major carrier route for NJ Transit and local buses.
Initial construction will begin this week. Temporary lane closures will be necessary on Park Avenue daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and continuing for about two weeks.
Beginning around June 4, North Marginal Street will be reduced from three travel lanes to one. The project will be completed in October.
The bus stop at the North Marginal Street bridge will be temporarily closed. Detour signs will be in place to guide bus customers to the next stop at Hudson Street.
‘Mommy and Me’ hosts a tea
The Family Alliance Network of North Hudson County is having its annual Mommy and Me tea party (girls and boys) on May 22 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Weehawken Senior Nutrition Center. The event is free, with a suggested donation of $5 for non-member families.

Weehawken Historical Commission leads walking tour
On May 22 at 10 a.m. the Weehawken Historical Commission members will lead a walking tour of the Weehawken Heights section of town. Starting at the site of the old wagon lift and 100 steps, the tour includes the site of the Civil War encampment, the Shippen Street horseshoe, industries and businesses on Gregory Avenue, noted historical residences of the area, and ends at the township’s new reading park at Maple Street and Palisade Avenue.
The tour will last approximately two hours. Interested parties should meet at Washington Street (20th Street) and Gregory Avenue at 9:45 am. The rain date is May 23 at 10 a.m. For further information, call the Recreation Department at (201) 319-6061.
Two arrested for allegedly stealing credit cards in Weehawken
Two women from Jersey City were arrested on May 8 in relation to a Weehawken case. They were charged with allegedly using credit cards from a purse stolen in a Weehawken restaurant on May 6 to purchase over $500 worth of goods at a Hoboken chain drug store later that day.
One of the women, Carmen Salgado, 36, was charged with theft by deception, identity theft, and forgery. Charges against the other person were dismissed.
She could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison for the third-degree charges, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.
DeFazio said the arrest came after a surveillance video at the Hoboken drug store led to identification.
Free health seminar on neck and shoulder pain offered
Palisades Medical Center will provide a free, bilingual health seminar on on-operative treatment of neck and shoulder pain on May 19 at 6:30 p.m.
The featured speaker will be Daniel Mendez, M.D., who will discuss conservative treatment options that can relieve neck and shoulder pain without surgery, such as exercises, mobilization, and education in posture.
The seminar will take place at Palisades Medical Center, 7600 River Road, North Bergen. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and the seminar will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Free parking is available and free transportation will also be provided from 60th Street and Bergenline Avenue starting at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the event.

Free bird walk offered for all Hudson County residents
On May 18 at 10 a.m., the N.J. Meadowlands Commission and Bergen County Audubon Society will host a free two-hour guided nature walk to the legendary Harrier Meadow in North Arlington. The walk will begin with a bird-banding demonstration.
The 70-acre site, usually off limits to the public, features ponds and tidal impoundments and birds aplenty. The group will meet at 10 a.m. at the entrance to Harrier Meadow on Disposal Road.
