It’ll be ‘Activist Saturday’ in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY — Do you like protests and political action? Then two events this Saturday, May 8, are for you.
At 11:30 a.m., the Jersey City Tea Party Alliance is holding a rally at the Bandstand in Lincoln Park.
According to their press release, the rally is to “uphold the principle of individual freedom that is ensured by our Constitution.”
The Tea Party movement is a mostly conservative movement that started in early 2009 to oppose President Barack Obama’s stimulus plan but has gained controversy for being primarily opposed to Obama’s presidency.
Featured speakers include 2009 At-Large council candidate Andrew Hubsch and Sean Connelly, former Jersey City corporation counsel in Bret Schundler’s administration.
Then, on the other side of the political spectrum…
At 2:30 p.m., a community forum hosted by Hudson Council MoveOn.org will be held at Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne St. in Jersey City, NJ.
The forum, “Take Back Democracy From Corporations and Lobbyists,” will have the following speakers: John Bonifaz, Legal Director of Voter Action and Director of the Free Speech for People Campaign, and journalist and film maker Danny Schechter.
MoveOn.org is a public advocacy group started in 1998 as a response to former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment. The group has gained attention for its mass mobilzation in getting President Obama elected in 2008, and has received its share of controversy for putting out an ad in 2007 attacking Gen. David Petraeus, then the lead commander in Iraq. – RK
