County budget to be introduced next week: Will rate rise for your town?

HUDSON COUNTY – Will your county taxes rise, drop, or stay the same? Property owners in the county pay taxes whose rates come from three entities: The city, the schools, and the county. The county budget is usually struck in May or June.
County Executive Tom DeGise is scheduled to present the county budget to the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders this Wednesday, May 12. The freeholders will vote on whether to introduce the budget the next day, May 13. After that, there will be a public hearing on the budget some time weeks later, when the public can give suggestions or comments. That hearing has not yet been scheduled. The freeholders could take a final vote on the spending plan in June.
The total 2010 county budget has not been released to the public. The approved 2009 budget was $398 million.
Hudson County has for years experienced rising personnel costs and declining non-tax revenues.
The tax rates for each town will vary, depending on the value of the property in that town and whether real estate sales last year will high or low. So far, officials have said that Secaucus’ rate will actually go down this year, while Hoboken’s is likely to go up.
