Rotary hosts mayoral debate today (April 28)
The Bayonne Rotary Club will be hosting the mayoral debate at the Knights of Columbus Hall on April 28. The event is by invitation only, but it will be broadcast later on Cablevision.
City master plan on hold – for the moment
C ity Planner John Fussa said the review of the city’s new master plan is on hold temporarily while his office continues to review several key redevelopment plans, including a proposed new redevelopment plan for the west side of Route 440.
Fussa said once these are taken care of, he expects to hold another public presentation on the master plan.
A master plan is a conceptual proposal for how development should occur in a city or town over the next few decades.
Sires Votes to Extend Unemployment Benefits
Rep. Albio Sires joined his colleagues in swiftly passing legislation by a vote of 289 to 112 to extend unemployment benefits and other programs last week.
This legislation was then immediately sent to the Senate. This legislation would restore federal unemployment benefits to those who lost their benefits on April 5, 2010 and extend benefits through June 2, 2010. H.R. 4851 will also extend COBRA health insurance subsidies.
“This extension is long overdue and I am hopeful that we will begin work immediately towards a long-term extension,” Sires said.
Historic society scholarship deadline is May 7
The Bayonne Historical Society introduced this year for the first time a scholarship program. To qualify for the Leadership in Community Service Scholarship, a student must be a resident of Bayonne, must be a registered accredited college/university-bound senior in a Bayonne high school for the current academic year, must have a GPA of 3.2 or above, must be active in leadership in the Bayonne community, and must take part in extracurricular activities. Applications and instructions are available in the high school guidance office. The deadline for applying is May 7.
New ship to sail from Port Liberty
One of four new cruise ships from Celebrity Cruises is set to sail from Bayonne to the Caribbean in a range of trips from four to 14 nights. The cruise line will offer 14 alternating southern and eastern Caribbean voyages, according to a spokesperson from Celebrity Cruises.
