NB Police make DWI, fraudulent document arrests

North Bergen

Police observe bottle of Bud in car

A North Bergen man was charged with driving while intoxicated and refusing a breathalyzer test after police say they witnessed him allegedly go through five red lights on Tonnelle Avenue at an “extremely high rate of speed” on Wednesday.
Commander of the Detective Bureau Lt. Frank Cannella said police observed a gray Acura travelling on Tonnelle Avenue last week on April 21 at 1:55 a.m. The officer patrolling the area watched as Edward Gyuro, 28, North Bergen, allegedly drove at a high rate of speed through the 74th, 79th, 81st and 83rd Street intersections, police said.

“He [allegedly] didn’t even hesitate,” said Cannella.
The officer was able to make a motor vehicle stop at 84th Street. Gyuro allegedly had an open bottle of Budweiser in the center cup console and his speech was allegedly slurred.
Cannella said that officers administered a roadside sobriety test, which was when Gyuro allegedly became “confrontational” and allegedly refused to take a breathalyzer.
“At some point, he [allegedly] repeated to the officers on several occasions, ‘Just lock me up; I’m drunk,’ ” said Cannella.

Man allegedly tries to pass fraudulent docs for license

According to Cannella, Cecellio Yax Sarat went to the Division of Motor Vehicle office at 8901 Bergenline Ave. on April 19 and allegedly attempted to obtain a license with fraudulent documents.
Sarat, who later told police he was a Guttenberg resident originally from Guatemala, allegedly presented DMV employees with a Puerto Rican birth certificate and a U.S. Social Security card, which were both fraudulent documents, and applied with the name Fabian Luyando Carrasquillo, police said.
The Social Security number returned to a person from Pennsylvania and employees were able to obtain a photo of the person, who did not resemble Sarat, police said.
Cannella said that Sarat claimed he allegedly purchased the birth certificate from an unknown male from Riverdale, N.J. for $1,500.
Police also reported the situation to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Guttenberg

Police forced to remove door… again

Police were called to an apartment to investigate a domestic dispute involving a child on April 21 at 12 p.m., according to Guttenberg Capt. Joel Magenheimer.
When they arrived, they could hear a child, a dog, and water running, but no one answered the door after repeatedly asking to be admitted. Police had to call North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue personnel to force entry into the apartment.
When they entered, they say they discovered whatever fight had occurred had been settled. They found Derek Smallen, 29, of North Bergen, sitting on the couch, and Maria Medina, 31, of Guttenberg, in her bedroom.
Smallen allegedly told police that he had brought their child over to see Medina, and that she told him to not open the door for the police.
“[She allegedly told police that she] was scared and that she did not know what to do, and she did not want to open the door,” according to the report.
Police said that they also had to forcibly open Medina’s door last September to enforce a search warrant and a warrant for her arrest. On that occasion, they charged her with possessing drug paraphernalia and hypodermic needles. Magenheimer said that Medina was on probation for this incident, but when police checked on her with headquarters last week, they discovered an outstanding warrant for her arrest.
She was charged with possession of prescription pills, hindering apprehension, and resisting arrest. Smallen was charged with hindering apprehension.
“The moral of this story is she was afraid that she had a warrant,” said Magenheimer. “We weren’t there for a warrant. We were there for [this] problem, but she put everyone in harm’s way by us having to bust the door in.”
