Leadership needed to improve Jersey City’s schools

Dear Editor:
For the first time in more than 20 years, Jersey City has a chance to reverse our school system’s persistent failing performance. While they are huge challenges, neither the poverty of our neighborhoods nor the cuts in state funding are the biggest obstacle to a turnaround. One thing stands in the way: leadership. It is time to make the school board a felon-free zone. It is time to begin a national search for a superintendent who can make improving school performance more important than improving his compensation. Sterling Waterman would finally provide the board with a voice for parents. Carol Lester was instrumental in founding and running a successful charter school right here in Jersey City. Angel Valentin brings experience with the board and teachers’ support. All three bring a commitment to the kind of change of children and our city need. Change is in the air – it only takes your vote on April 20th.
