Day at the park

Opened three years ago, the Weehawken Waterfront Park and Recreation Center is a huge hit with Weehawken residents and people from all over Hudson County alike. With an artificial soccer field, three tennis courts, baseball fields, and track – all overlooking the Manhattan skyline – the 16-acre park right next to Lincoln Harbor is utilized by a number of organizations, including the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, and is a breezy and scenic way to relax or stay fit.

Last week, retired North Bergen Fire Captain Jack Whelan walked along the track and said that he was heading in to Hoboken later to stroll through the parks in the mile-square city. “There’s great scenery and a great breeze,” Whelan said. “It’s a great place to lose the weight.”
Although organized sports teams have regular permission to use the facility, kicking out any unlicensed users, the fields are often open to the public.
“We come four or five times a week,” said Brian Martin of Weehawken, who was coaching softball with his two children that day. “We’re here almost every day.”
