Few new details in death of Union City coupleBut murders likely took place in area before bodies were moved

HUDSON COUNTY — Officials from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office declined Thursday afternoon to release new details on the Union City man and woman whose dismembered bodies were found in garbage bags in Linden, N.J. on Monday.
However, sources indicated that it was likely that the murders took place in Hudson County before the bodies were moved.
The victims are Lazaro Calero, 49, and Maria Torres, 48. Calero was renting a room in the apartment where Torres lived.
The two bodies were found distributed among six bags along the side of the road in Linden on Monday after neighbors complained of flies swarming around illegally dumped garbage.
Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory said Thursday afternoon that there are no indications that the two had any relationship besides living together, but he added that is something they may never know for sure.
It had been suggested by neighbors near the apartment on Fourth Street and Bergenline Avenue, where Torres and Calero lived, that the crime may have taken place there.
The prosecutors would not comment. They also would not comment yet about possible motives or suspects.
The police investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact Union County Crime Stoppers at (908) 527-4621 or the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345. Watch www.hudsonreporter.com for updates.
