NORTH BERGEN AND BEYOND — This weekend, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office is hosting an event sponsored by the NJ Car Club Against Street Racing. The Mustang Show for Charity is a free event, open to the public, which will have approximately 40 Ford Mustangs on display. Attendees will be allowed to take pictures with the cars and talk with other car enthusiasts.
The club brings their cars to a different NJ location every day of the week, such as ice cream shops, bowling alleys, malls, and other gathering places, to talk about the positive aspects of sports cars.
“The mustang is a very powerful car,” said Hudson County Sheriff’s Officer Alex Pino. “It catches the eye of young teens and college students, but we want it to catch their eye in a good way not a bad way.”
Members of the club encourage young car lovers to dismiss the dangerous notions of sports cars they see in movies and video games and become a hobbyist or even consider a career in cars.
The car show will be held at Braddock Park in North Bergen on March 27; it begins at noon and will continue until approximately 6 p.m.
The event comes on the heels of a dangerous drag race in Union City last weekend which ended in a trail of injuries and property damage.
Police are still looking for the drivers of two cars that they say were drag racing on New York Avenue in Union City early last Sunday morning shortly after 5 a.m. The drivers left a trail of injuries and property damage before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.
The cars collided with each other on New York Avenue between 27th and 28th streets and skidded to a stop between 30th and 31st streets, where the Cadillac turned over.
Union City Police Chief Charles Everett said it is unclear how many people were in the two vehicles, but there may have been as many as eight in the two cars.
