I have been following with some interest, the recent letters concerning a citizen confused over residency status and the parking privileges that accrue to it.
I had, at first, also wondered why the car in question was not registered in New Jersey, since it seemed it was here for a few months at a time.
However, I think bringing up the property tax issue is irrelevant as to whether one is a resident or not. I always thought that since I own property in Hoboken, I owe the same taxes whether I use it for 6 months a year or 12 months a year. The anonymous writer makes an interesting suggestion – that we pay taxes on our property only for the days that we spend time there. I do not see how this can be feasibly worked out and I wonder: who would pay the taxes when my house was empty, when I have a work assignment out of state?
Incidentally, I also have to pay income taxes in other states, even though I am working there only a few days a year. I would certainly resent having to send in property taxes also, for the time I spent there.
If the issue is only a few pennies a year saved in car insurance, then why not simply register the car here, obtain a resident sticker and save the other few pennies that would be spent on a temporary parking permit?
