The tail of the ‘abandoned’ Hoboken dog…Posted March 19, 2010

HOBOKEN – A reader wrote in to share this incident that happened Thursday on Garden Street:
Thursday morning, a gorgeous black lab was left abandoned and leashed to a gate by a dry cleaner for four hours. The poor dog was shivering in fear, and would bare his teeth and growl when anyone tried to get too close. A concerned group of people soon gathered and brought the poor dog water, and my husband brought the dog food (the dog gulped a whole can). With the help of the dry cleaner who remembered the owner, the cops, and a neighbor who walked by who knew the dog, we figured out that the dog belonged to a man who brought the dog with him to drop off his dry cleaning at 7 in the morning, and then somehow “forgot” the dog on his way to work.
“The dog is their life!” the neighbor said, though clearly, this family has other things on their minds. The wife, when called, was too busy teaching to come and get the frightened dog. When the cop called the husband, he got a voice mail because the husband was in an “important” presentation.
Thanks go to the terrific patient cops, the Hoboken Animal Hospital who came to help, various neighbors who stuck around to soothe the dog and the animal rescue workers. No thanks to this couple who don’t deserve this beautiful dog. Ironic that this dog was chained up opposite the shoe store where there was a beloved, well-cared for dog who recently passed away. If you’re going to have pets, take care of them.
