Police Beat

St. Pat’s Parade wrap

The 25 arrests made on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade weekend included several bar punches, a few disorderly persons, and one assault on a police officer, police said.
Derek Durst, 25, New York City, was allegedly harassing people outside the W Hotel, even after being escorted toward the PATH station twice by police, according to a police report. He still allegedly returned and told the cops, “Just arrest me because I’m not going anywhere.”
Durst was arrested for disorderly conduct and, according to police, while entering the processing room, a half-filled pipe used to smoke marijuana fell, allegedly from his waistband. Thus, Durst was also charged with possession and use of a dangerous controlled substance.
In another incident, police charged a man, Jerome Stanley, 24, with simple assault after they witnessed him allegedly trying to take a ring off a woman’s finger and allegedly push her to the ground when he was unsuccessful.
Police did not report whether the two individuals had a relationship, but both hail from Basking Ridge. The woman declined to press charges.
One man, William Fitzpatrick, 22, of Yonkers, was arrested after police found him allegedly disrobing at Washington and First streets. Police intervened after Fitzpatrick had allegedly taken off his shirt and pants; he was charged with disorderly conduct.

Bloody parade mystery

Also during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, police observed a woman walking down Second Street with an “extreme amount of blood” on her sweater and jeans, according to the report. Police called for an ambulance.
When asked how she hurt herself, the woman, Juanita Sarria, 21, Englewood, told police she fell, but did not know where she was, police said.
Police asked other questions but the woman, allegedly drunk, threw herself to the ground and started hyperventilating. The ambulance crew arrived and found a deep laceration on her forearm.
At the same time, police were notified by security at a local bar that a woman fitting Sarria’s description had broken the quarter-inch thick window of the laundromat next door, either intentionally or accidentally.
Sarria was transported to Hoboken University Medical Center for treatment and was charged with criminal mischief.
The owner of the laundromat said replacement of the window will cost approximately $650. The owner did not press charges at the time.

Hoboken Democrats lose Liberty

A building manager for a commercial space across from the Hoboken train terminal – which is used as Hoboken Democratic Committee headquarters – reported that a six-foot tall green rubber Statue of Liberty was taken from the hall inside the building sometime between Monday, March 1 and Friday, March 5.
The statue, according to the man, belongs to former Mayor David Roberts and is valued at roughly $500.
Other businesses may have had access to the building, the man told police. Police found no pry marks on either of two entrances to the building.

Cash for clunker

A garage attendant was allegedly assaulted by a man who couldn’t pay $18 for parking just after midnight on Wednesday, March 10.
The attendant’s left eye was swollen and irritated when police arrived, and he told them that the man had punched him several times after the attendant refused to hand over the keys to the vehicle without payment.
Police searched the area for the man the attendant described, but found no one.
The vehicle sought was a 2004 Mitsubishi truck with a Texas license plate, owned by a Texas resident. Police found that this Texas man has a warrant for his arrest in Jersey City. However, they do not know if the owner of the car was the one who committed the alleged assault.
Police are investigating the incident, which may have been caught on surveillance video.
