BAYONNE — Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone has drawn up paperwork to file a lawsuit forcing his political opponent, Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith, to either resign as mayor or as a police officer.
Citing a recent ruling against the mayor of Wildwood, Chiappone said he is filing the complaint in order to force Smith to choose between the two jobs.
“Once he declares his candidacy, we’re filing,” Chiappone said during a phone interview.
Smith announced his mayoral ticket on March 11. Chiappone is running against Smith for mayor in the May election in Bayonne.
