JC cop sentenced for killing woman while driving drunk
Jersey City cop Martin Abreu was sentenced Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Court to up to 10 and a half years behind bars for hitting and killing a New York University law school grad with his car last February in Manhattan.
On Feb. 7, 2009, according to the Daily News, “Abreu was driving drunk on West Street when he plowed into Marilyn Feng, 26, and her boyfriend Dennis Loffredo, 26.”
Abreu pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular manslaughter in December, according to the story.
Feng was killed at the scene while Loffredo suffered injuries to his legs and head. Police at the time said Abreu’s blood alcohol level was high.
The 26-year-old Abreu had been suspended by the Jersey City Police Department pending the outcome of his trial.

School for the blind receives donation from UPS
UPS Metro Jersey District and the UPS Foundation recently awarded Concordia Leaning Center at St. Joseph’s School for the Blind a $25,000 check to upgrade the school’s information technology system. Through this funding, network upgrades will ensure the security of all data and flow of communication at Concordia Learning Center.
The Concordia Leaning Center at St. Joseph’s School for the Blind is located on Summit Avenue in Jersey City.
In addition to the grant award, 25 UPS Metro Jersey District team members tackled a series of hands-on projects at the school including fence repair and clean-up of the sensory gardens. The volunteers also conducted an information session with student reporters from the school newspaper, “The Student Voice.”
The UPS Metro Jersey District is headquartered in Secaucus and delivers to an area that stretches across all or parts of Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Sussex, Warren, Hudson, Union, Morris, Hunterdon, Monmouth and Middlesex counties in New Jersey and the borough of Staten Island, N.Y. as well as Spring Valley, N.Y.
Chabad of Hoboken celebrates Purim
Chabad of Hoboken’s annual Grand Purim Party will be held at the Elks Club, 1005 Washington St. on Feb. 28. This year’s theme, Purim at the Circus, will feature a Kosher circus-style buffet dinner, including concession stands with hot dogs, cotton candy and popcorn, circus décor and entertainment for the kids. Doors open at 3 pm and the reading of the Megillah will commence at 3:30 pm, followed by a scrumptious buffet dinner, live music and dancing, and the traditional hamentashen.
All are welcome to join regardless of affiliation or background. The cost is $25 per adult and $10 a child/ Stevens students at the door.
NJCU ‘Make Believe’ art exhibit
New Jersey City University is debuting its new art exhibit, “Make Believe” with an opening reception on Monday, March 1 from 5-8 p.m. at the university’s Visual Arts Gallery, 100 Culver Ave. in Jersey City. The exhibit will on display from March 1-April 1.
Make Believe is an exhibition of artists whose work appropriates or references folk or fairy tales.
Curated by Debra Jenks, the exhibit features works by Aliza Augustine, Susan Breitsch, Jason Covert, Michelle Handelman, Wendy Hirschberg, Sarah Julig, Akino Kondoh, Yuliya Lanina, Ken Madore, Norma Markley, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Don Porcella, Roxanne Wolanczyk, and Jeanne Wilkinson.
There will also be an Artists’ Talk about the exhibit on Tuesday, March 23, 7 p.m. in the auditorium (next to the gallery).
Gallery hours are from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Discussion on Michelangelo at local church
There will be a discussion on the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo on Mar. 5, 7:45 p.m. in the Cityline Church Auditorium, 1510 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City.
The discussion, “Michelangelo Revealed: A Stimulating Session about Art, The Renaissance and the Church” will be presented by local artist Duda Penteado.
Guest panelists are Rev. Joshua Rodriguez, Senior Pastor, The Cityline Church and Dr. Carlos Hernandez, President, New Jersey City University.
