JERSEY CITY —As reported in this past weekend’s Jersey City Reporter, the Jersey City Police Department lists 28 homicides in all of 2009. That would be an 8 percent jump from the 2008 total of 26 homicides as indicated in the State Police’s 2008 Uniform Crime Report.
However, research done by the Reporter, checking both its articles and others on the web, came up with 29 homicides in 2009, which would be an 11 percent increase in homicides from the previous year. Chief Thomas Comey said he will have to look back at all the homicides to see whether there were 29.
Ten of last year’s homicides, as well as the first two of this year, have had young men as victims. Law enforcement officials have said in the past that some of the shootings may be interrelated due to gangs’ need for revenge.
