A funeral service took place Dec. 7 at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church for Margaret Mongelli, 92. She passed away quietly Dec. 3 in her North Bergen home. Known to her family and friends as “Mickie,” she was a lifelong Hudson County resident with a passion to maintain the quality of life in her community. Margaret was born Michelina Trevelise in Union Hill, which later merged with West Hoboken to become Union City. After her marriage to Thomas A. Mongelli in 1940, the couple lived in Union City before settling in North Bergen in 1946. Primarily a homemaker, loving wife and mother, Margaret also developed a high level of community involvement. Its roots can be traced to the Great Depression, when she advocated for labor unions to improve conditions in Union City’s embroidery trade in which she worked. While raising her family, Margaret’s community involvement continued with the presidency of the Horace Mann School Parent-Teacher Association. After working locally for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in 1960, she became a district committeewoman for the Hudson County Democratic Organization. Later in the decade, she campaigned for former North Bergen Commissioner and State Assemblyman Anthony P. Vainieri, and led the Ladies’ Auxiliary of his community organization. During her tenure, the group raised significant funds for the dialysis program of Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills, New Jersey. In the early 1960s, Margaret was among the residents of North Bergen’s Racetrack section who organized the area’s first Roman Catholic church. Their efforts culminated in the completion of Our Lady of Fatima Church in 1965. As president of its Holy Rosary Society, she enhanced its community outreach programs. Margaret also presided over the M & T Social Club Ladies’ Auxiliary of Union City, organizing charity events and bus rides that benefited local causes. She also worked as a sales clerk for Holthausen’s Department Store in Union City, and for Corduroy Village in North Bergen.Margaret was predeceased by her husband Thomas; by two sisters, Anna and Mary; and by seven brothers, Edward, Anthony, Nicholas, Louis, Paul, Andrew, John and Thomas. She is survived by a brother Albert, and a sister, Catherine DeGregoli. Margaret is also survived by two daughters, Marie Elena Spagnuolo and Joyce DeClemete; a son Thomas G. Mongelli; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Services arranged by the Vainieri Funeral Home, North Bergen.
