WEEHAWKEN AND BEYOND — Earlier today, a tractor trailer nearly overturned as it was travelling west-bound in the right lane on I-495 helix just outside the Lincoln Tunnel. Both Port Authority and Weehawken authorities responded to the scene in which no injuries were reported.
“[It] was a small miracle,” said Weehawken Deputy Chief Jeff Fulcher, who added that traffic was back to normal by 2:30 p.m. “Part of the truck’s load of steel parts and other debris fell onto the roadway below, but did not strike anyone or any vehicles.”
He added, “The investigation into the incident closed the entire westbound helix for several hours, as both police personnel and roadway engineers closely examined the truck and retaining wall for structural defects and other safety concerns before righting the truck with heavy-duty towing equipment.”
He said it is expected that several traffic charges will be made against the driver to the truck after the investigation is finalized.
