Secaucus to honor football team at Dec. 5 tree lighting event

SECAUCUS– In a return to tradition, Secaucus will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony in the town Plaza, rather than in Buchmuller Park, where the ceremony has been held for the past several years.
“This change will give the whole celebration a more community-oriented feel,” Mayor Richard said. “We’ve invited all the businesses and merchants in the Plaza to participate because the whole event will really highlight the center of our town and business district.”
A key feature of this change will be a 25-year-old Norway Spruce tree that has been planted in the Plaza. This tree will become the permanent holiday tree each year for the holiday tree lighting, Steffens added.
Steffens said Secaucus Shared Service Electrician Richard Damato came up with the idea and sold it to the council members who, Steffens said were very enthusiastic about the concept.
During the ceremony the town will also pay tribute to the Secaucus High School Patriots football team. This Friday, the undefeated team will challenge Cedar Grove High School in the state championships (NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2) at Giants Stadium.
The Secaucus High School Band also will be on hand and several elementary school classes will sing Christmas carols.
The tree lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. (Rain
date: Sunday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.)
