HOBOKEN, UNION CITY, AND BEYOND — Jin Park, a resident of Hoboken who has gotten involved to help the less fortunate in Hoboken with various issues, sent a letter to the City Council making them aware of an on-line petition to get better animal control services in Hoboken and Union City.
The question of where to put stray animals for adoption has long haunted Hudson County, which lacks a clean countywide shelter. In Jersey City, there used to be an SPCA shelter, but after years and years of problems, it was closed last year after doing poorly in health inspections.
Jersey City luckily has another shelter, the Liberty Humane Shelter — founded seven years ago by volunteers — to take their animals.
But what about the rest of the towns?
Many use the Associated Humane Society shelter in Newark. Recently, some activists have complained about conditions there as well.
Towns like Secaucus and Bayonne, and even West New York, have tried to come up with their own shelters. But that doesn’t solve the countywide problem.
Here is Park’s letter:
To the Mayor and members of the City Council:
I am a proud and active citizen of Hoboken, and I am requesting that we resolve a long-standing problem in our community.
Please be advised that an online petition to your attention is in circulation, proposing that procurement of efficient and humane animal control be enacted as soon as possible. Its absence and concomitant impact on our city’s quality of life do not accurately – or kindly – reflect the interests and values of many of its residents.

It would be wonderful to reach a satisfactory solution to this matter that troubles so many of us. Especially now that the local election has concluded and we can all focus on the business of the people, I am so optimistic that we can work together to make Hoboken better than ever!
