MARMORA, JOSEPH P. SR

A funeral mass was offered Nov. 3 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Jersey City, for Joseph P. Marmora, Sr., 92, of Jersey City and Elberon, N.J. He passed away Oct. 30. Joseph founded Imperial Shoe Store, Jersey City. Joseph started work at a very early age. In 1936 he opened a small business. Ten years later, he established his present business, the Imperial Shoe Store on West Side Avenue, in which he was still active with his son, Joseph Jr. Joseph was a longtime and the oldest surviving member of the Dante Alighieri Society, Jersey City. His affection and respect for the society was reflected by his many years of dedication. He was a Board of Trustees member, Building Chairman and Treasurer for many years. In 1999 he was selected as the “Man of the Year.” His charitable interests also included long-time membership in the Metropolitan Opera Guild, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Foundation and the Italian-American Foundation of Washington, D.C. An artist who loved to paint landscapes, he also enjoyed golf, classical music, gardening and was an avid reader of history. Joseph was the patriarch of a large family who emigrated from Salerno, Italy. His life is a testament that any heights reached and success gained can been achieved through hard-work and dedication. His love and support for his children and grandchildren will be greatly missed. Joseph is survived by his wife Mary. He was the father of Joseph Jr. and his wife Marianne, Janine Piscitello and her husband Gregory; the grandfather of Michael and Allison Marmora, Lauren, Alyssa and Matthew Piscitello; the brother of Mary Capetola and the late Carmella, Nicholas, Antoinette, Tony, John, Frank and Louis, and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
