Thanks to Zimmer and Stuiver for help with water main break

Dear Editor: We would like to take the opportunity to thank acting Mayor Dawn Zimmer and our newly appointed Housing Authority Commissioner Jake Stuiver for helping our residents during the two recent water-main breaks and not playing politics. We saw both Dawn and Jake on the scene quickly during both outages. During the first one, they were working hard to inform residents about the situation, reassure them that the water would be back on soon and get emergency services down here to take care of our needs. During the second incident, Dawn got a water truck down here right away and made sure it got delivered to residents who have difficulty getting around on their own, and got the water turned back on in a shorter time, while other politicians came down here just to smile for the news cameras. Jake took time away from his job in the middle of the day to come down here and help out. Also during the first outage, while Dawn was working hard to get the water back on, other people running for mayor came down and started handing out little bottles of water. Some candidates had their campaign labels on the water bottles, and some had them given out by people in campaign T-shirts. It was nice that some candidates gave out water, but had this happened after the election, we don’t think some of them would have even answered their phone. We appreciate the fact that Dawn worked on the actual problem instead of just giving out little plastic bottles to get votes, and we appreciate that Jake came down here to help out both times even though emergency management is not really part of a housing commissioner’s responsibilities. We also appreciate having a commissioner who has a strong relationship with the mayor, because in both incidents we were able to get ahold of him right away and he passed the information along and helped solve the problem. We know many residents who were affected by the water main breaks who feel the same way we do. Many thanks to both Dawn and Jake, and let’s stick to the facts instead of playing politics. Sincerely, Kyelia Colon and Sandra Smith President and Vice President, Resident Council of Andrew Jackson Gardens South
