SLUKA, MARY

A funeral service took place Oct. 26 at St. Ann’s Polish Church, Jersey City, for Mary Sluka, 88. She passed away peacefully on Oct. 23. She was a native and life-long resident and well known volunteer of Jersey City. Mary was born on June 10, 1921 and married her husband, Joseph Sluka on August 7, 1948. Together they raised seven children and became the pillars of the Journal Square community. Prior to raising her own family, she raised five younger brothers after the early death of her mother. Mary believed that community volunteer service was a responsibility of every resident, and lived accordingly. She started when her children were in elementary school as a Class Mom for all of her children. She served hot dogs and sloppy joe’s every Wednesday to the school children. She was the PTA President of St. Ann’s Polish School and was a long time member of the Rosary Society. Mary and her husband ran the New Year’s Eve Party at St. Ann’s until it closed. She was a dedicated officer of the St. Ann’s Senior Citizen Club for many years and a great organizer for the Christmas Party and Annual Tricky Tray. Just a couple of days ago she was selling 50/50 Raffles to benefit the Church Community. Mary was the wife of Joseph R. Sluka for 61 years; the mother of John “Jack” Sluka, Dr. Joseph Sluka, Marilyn Kelly, Michael Sluka Esq., Dr. Barbara Piccolo, Keith Sluka, and Kevin Sluka. She was predeceased by her brothers, James, Bob, Richard and John Kenneth, and is survived by her brother, Donald Church. She was the grandmother of 17 and the great-grandmother of four and loyal friend of Helen Narozny and many others. Services arranged by the Evergreen Funeral Home, Jersey City.
