Walking around the mile-square city of Hoboken, with its gorgeous rowhomes and waterfront views, can make for a great day as it is – but on one day each year, visitors and residents can also stop into dozens of artists’ studios and enjoy their creations.
The 29th annual Hoboken Artist Studio Tours run on Sunday, Oct. 18 from noon to 6 p.m. The free event allows anyone to grab a map and view scores of exhibits and studios showing all kinds of art.
It’s not just painting, but sculpture, photography, dance, and other types of creations.
There are more than 20 stops on the tour this year, and the organizers have designed it so that you can walk from one studio or exhibition to the next. Tour maps and guides will be available on the day of the tour at City Hall, 94 Washington St. between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and they also appeared in last week’s Hoboken Reporter and Midweek Reporter newspapers.
Varied styles
This year, media range from abstract expressionism to welded steel sculptures to photography to computer generated images.
Some of the featured artists include: Tim Daly (lyrical realistic landscapes), Carlos Page (metal sculture & furniture), Leslie Rubman (mixed media using found and recycled objects), Howard Viuker (hand thrown porcelain & stoneware ceramics), Roslyn Rose (photographic montage), Hiro Takeshita (Japanese art form Kirie – using cut paper), and Virginia Rolston Parrott (color photography).
Most of the art will be available for purchase. And if you don’t see exactly what you want, place a special order directly with the artist.
About the show
Hoboken has attracted artists through its years as an inexpensive alternative to New York City and a blue-collar industrial town. In the last two decades, the city has seen both its waterfront and its interior redeveloped and added thousands of new residents to its arts community.
Many of Hoboken’s outdoor cafes and multi-cultural restaurants will display art and will offer brunch, lunch, and dinner specials throughout the day. Some establishments will even offer live performances.
The city recommends taking Hoboken’s numerous forms of public transportation. Hoboken is accessible by PATH, NJ Transit Trains & Buses, Hudson Bergen Lightrail, and NY Waterway Ferries.
This year, the tour is sponsored by Acting Mayor Dawn Zimmer, the City of Hoboken, the Hoboken Reporter, and the Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs.
They are also sponsored by Larry Bijou and Bijou Properties, a company that has launched a campaign to fund the arts in Hoboken. Bijou is a developer who is known as an advocate for “Green Buildings” that minimize impact on the environment.
