YOUNG, ANDREW

A funeral mass was celebrated Oct. 9 at Church of Saint Paul the Apostle, New York, for Andrew Young, noted hairstylist for 57 years and owner of salons on Madison Avenue, 42nd Street, and 36th Street in New York City, the heart of the garment district, who died of cardiac arrest at the age of 75. He was a resident of North Bergen for ten years. As a renowned colorist and haircutter, his current salon was named Andrew’s Haute Coiffure. He had as many as 12 stylists on staff in the different locations throughout the city. Young was also noted for catering to several generations of clients. Mothers would proudly send their daughters and other relatives as clients. Mr. Young was born in Hamlet, N.C. and went to beauty school in Charlotte, N.C. He came to New York at 19 years old, determined to make it as a hairdresser. He was first recognized as a creator of fabulous wig creations but did “bread and butter work” for Broadway productions, such as “Raisin in the Sun” and TV personalities as NBC’s Carole Simpson and actress Hattie Winston. His salon was booked so solid for New Year’s Eve drama styles that clients fought over positions.
