TEAMWALKER

The Walk for Team Walker Succeeds in Inaugural Year – Jerry Walker, who led Seton Hall University’s basketball team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, continues to devote his time and energy to youngsters in Jersey City

Over 300 participants gathered on a sunny morning at Exchange Place last Saturday in Jersey City for the inaugural Walk for Team Walker. Participants walked to raise funds for Team Walker, an organization that was founded to uplift and create positive alternatives for the youth of Jersey City through programs designed to enlighten participants and teach the importance of solid academics, teamwork and sportsmanship.

“We were greatly encouraged by the turnout for a first year event and thank all of the supporters who are making a difference for the young people here in Jersey City. This is an event that can really grow,” said Walker, President/CEO of Team Walker. “I was very pleased to have all of my friends from Seton Hall join us. It’s also great when the Athletic Department sens The Pirate out to be with my kids.”

In addition to the invigorating walk, participants enjoyed the event entertainment which included: face painting, balloon twisting, refreshments, a drum corps and music provided by DJ Luther Wright, who also played for the Pirates. Professional mascots from the New Jersey Nets and Somerset Patriots also were present as the scenic views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline made for an ideal setting.

“It was a great day in Jersey City,” explained Leo Zatta, a Seton Hall graduate and now chairman of Team Walker. “This was a chance for people to have a lot of fun and raise money for the youngsters of Jersey City. I know the Seton Hall fans loved seeing Luther as the DJ and we hope to make this an annual event.”

Team Walker, established in 1996 by Jerry and Jasper Walker, has a vision to provide a program for inner-city youths that focuses on teamwork, responsibility, persistence and unity. This special program grants the students constructive academic and recreational activities in which to participate as a replacement to the negative alternatives on the streets. Team Walker seeks to enrich the lives of these children through this structured academic and recreational environment. Walker returned to Jersey City after a professional playing career in Europe to help children in his hometown.
