MAKING HISTORY AND PROUD OF IT!!!

Union City elected Commissioner Maryury A. Martinetti tells us that she is the first elected female Hispanic commissioner in the city’s history and is very proud of the fact and humble at the same time!
Commissioner Martinetti, who heads the department of revenue and finance was born in Equador in South America, came to the United States in the early 1980s and settled in Union City. Her maiden name being Romero, Commissioner Martinetti tells us that she then moved to West New York and attended Memorial High School before moving back to Union City, and her loving parent’s names are Nestor and Vilma. After high school, she achieved an associate’s degree in science in the 1990s, and then went on to achieve a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 2000 at Hudson County Community College and New Jersey City University, respectively! After college she was hired at the Union City Board of Education, and has been promoted to coordinator of medical nursing services over the years, and still presently holds the position.
In 2006, she was chosen to replace and complete the unexpired term of former and deceased Commissioner Michael A. Leggiero, and then was elected to a full term, and the experience has been very fulfilling! In 2005, she happily married her husband Martin Martinetti, Construction Official for Union City, who previously worked for a utility company, and they are proud parents of a son Martin Angelo, and a daughter Angelina Marie.
Commissioner Martinetti tells us that since her marriage the family travels to the shore at Cape May, museums, and basically anything that can be done with two young children for recreation, and they also travel to the Pennsylvania mountain areas. Other places that she has visited with her husband are Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the island of St. Thomas. As for music, she enjoys Latin music, while her husband enjoys Metallica and rock and roll. Commissioner Martinetti also states that her husband likes to cook Italian and German dishes, while she cooks Spanish as well as Italian dishes.
As for community affairs, Commissioner Martinetti has been named the “Woman of the Year” by local cultural newspapers in 2006/2007, and enjoys helping upgrade the image of women in life and government, and gets involved in Women’s History Month each year! Her involvement in women’s Health Care events are notable, and these events offer free mammography tests, CAT Scans, physicals, and nutrition programs, throughout the year! Commissioner Martinetti also likes to seek out female speakers who have succeeded in business, and also how to be mothers as well, as motivational speakers for the public, and these events are all done through the Union City Mayor’s office. Also through the Mayor’s Office, Commissioner Martinetti gets involved with Immigration Services, tax preparation, and the Food Pantry. She is also a member of the Board of ARC of New Jersey, which deals with children with disabilities!
However, after community work and affairs, both she and her husband do try to steal some time away by attending New York Giants and Pittsburg Steelers games when they can, to wind down!
When Commissioner Martinetti was asked why she chose elective office as a vocation, she answered that she felt a need for a woman in city government, and especially since there is a large Hispanic population, with Hispanic women being a large part of that population, and family-unit! Currently, Commissioner Martinetti has also been active at the Board of Education coordinating Swine Flu medical arrangements with nurses there, especially with the coming Autumn/Winter seasons coming, to combat the possible flu invasion within their school/community population! Thus, Commissioner Martinetti takes her community affairs very seriously, and is protective of the citizens she represents, in all areas of their lives and welfare. However, Commissioner Maryury Martinetti wants to offer hope and happiness to all she helps on a daily basis. So, Commissioner Martinetti, smile and the whole world will smile with you! All the Best!!!

Recently, Guttenberg lost a great man in former and now deceased Mayor James Hannon. His loyal wife Patricia telephoned me and gave me the sad news. This Columnist can tell you that Mr. Hannon came into Guttenberg government during a turbulent time in the town’s history, and during his several months at the helm, he healed wounds with his grandfatherly wit and human touch, and became loved by his peers in Town Hall! He became a friend and confidant with such peers like present Mayor Gerald Drasheff, Police Captain Joel Magenheimer, and Town Police Director Michael Calaguiro of West New York, and Town Clerk Alberto Cabrera of Weehawken. Truly this was a man who was chosen for such a time as this, and now GOD has given him his greatest reward in heaven with HIM! James Hannon, REST IN PEACE!
And so it goes … until next time … see you around town …“MATT”
