At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell sent the following letter to Town Administrator David Drumeler:
“Please be advised that effective immediately that I am resigning my position as mayor of the Town of Secaucus. Very truly yours, Dennis Elwell.”
Elwell, who has been mayor of Secaucus since 2000, had been widely expected to resign from his position following his arrest last Thursday on federal corruption charges. He was one of 44 officials arrested in conjunction with an FBI sting of politicians and religious leaders.
Elwell had been set to face Councilman Michael Gonnelli in the mayoral election in November.
Right now, Councilman John Reilly, the deputy mayor, is serving as acting mayor of the town.
