Hoboken and race

Dear Editor:
Unfortunately the “race card” was played at this week’s Council meeting by former Independent Council candidate, Patricia Waiters. She made some claims that I can’t verify but one that I can. I was the Campaign Manager for an Independent, Chris Carbine. Like Patricia, Chris filled out the Hoboken Reporter’s questionnaire (as did Tim Occhipinti). Each had 2-3 sentences in the edition and had the full report on line. I was told this due to lack of space. Accusing the Reporter and Tim Carroll of racism is dead wrong. It was equal treatment for all.
I also worked with all six Independents in arranging a meet and greet at Texas Arizona. I phoned Ms. Waiter’s twice and received no answer. Chris met her at the Cablevision interview and told me she been ill. I called a third time and still did not receive an answer. The other five did attend. Why were my calls not returned? Was this because she realized that I am a white Jew? This is not how I think.
I have also met people that didn’t want to hear about my candidate and those who did not like to have their doorbell rung. There is no doubt that a minority of Hoboken citizens are prejudiced, but we live in one of the most diverse communities in the world with a small amount of friction. I travel overseas and kept reading that foreigners hated Americans because of George Bush, especially the French. The French were no different than anyone else. If you treat people with respect you usually have it returned. Accusing people only makes them angry. Ms. Waiters, I urge you to become a regular at the Council meetings and speak on the issues that concern you. I oppose the Council on many issues but have been treated properly by each one of them. I can assure you that you will be treated the same. Contrary to your statement, there are many people in our community who decry the lack of low and affordable housing. Especially when certain privileged people “game” the system at the expense of needy individuals. Your perspective on this matter would be welcome. If you have issues with certain people bring it up, but it is unfair to tar an entire community.
