Celebrating moms

Hundreds of senior citizens attended the annual Mother’s Day Luncheon hosted by the Union City Board of Commissioners at the Bruce Walter Recreation Center, at 502 West St., last weekend. All the mothers in the community were invited for free, and each one got a red rose courtesy of Mayor Brian Stack.
“We usually get a great turnout,” said Commissioner Lucio Fernandez.
Students in the ROTC program at Union City High School were there to help prepare, serve dinner and drinks, and help out in general.
“Today is a very special day, Mother’s Day,” said Gunnery Sgt. Caonabo Reyes, who helps run the ROTC program at the high school, “though every day should be a day to make mothers feel appreciated.”
He also said that it was important for his group to be there.
“They can learn to serve their community,” he said. “Instead of being at home sleeping, they are serving their community. They are growing up to be great citizens.”
Two younger children, Christina Bogran, 9, and her cousin, Marti Martinetti, the 3-year-old son of Commissioner Maryury Martinetti, also attended the event.
“It’s the best,” said Bogran, “because if I didn’t have my mommy, I wouldn’t be here.”
