Hoboken Superintendent of Schools John Raslowsky sent home a letter to parents in the district this past Monday saying he has spoken to parents and school staff about the Reporter’s May 3 cover story about the more than 29 incidents of alleged gang activity involving students at either the Demarest alternative high school, or the Hoboken Charter High School. (The latter gets some funding through the board but is not controlled by the board). Most of the incidents were said to have been related to the latter school.
Raslowsky’s letter read, in part, “Unfortunately, gangs are a fact of life in both urban and suburban America and have been for quite some time. The challenge for all school districts is to educate faculty, students and staff … and to provide alternatives for students that allow them to grow into healthy, productive members of society.”
The letter outlines recent education workshops and programs to educate teachers and students.
The letter does not address the specific incidents discussed in the Reporter article.
