Unsigned flyers offer $75 for a ballot

Flyers went up this morning at bus stops around Hoboken offering registered voters $75 for their “UNSEALED absentee ballot” and saying they should call either Mayoral Candidate Beth Mason, or Michele Russo, a Mason ally. (Russo’s son, Michael, is the 3rd Ward councilman and has endorsed Mason.)
We got a note from a reader who saw the signs: “Not sure if Beth Mason’s campaign is this dumb or one of the other campaigns is setting her up, but this is just another reason to not vote for any of the council candidates [for mayor].”
We think it’s the latter, that one of the other campaigns is setting her up. For one thing, Michele Russo’s name is spelled wrong.
The signs even have fluorescent green tear-offs with Beth and Michele’s phone numbers. Pretty fancy!
We called the numbers, but both just had answering machines. Too bad – $75 is good money in this recession!
We do expect a substantial get out the vote effort tomorrow.
