A funeral service was held May 6 for Robert A. Cosgrove Jr., 71. He passed away May 1 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Robert had been employed as a Health Inspector for the City of Jersey City, before retiring in 2001. As an Inspector, he had received numerous civilian awards from the City of Jersey City. He served his country as a U.S. Marine in the 3rd Batallion, 2nd Division, Port Lyautey, Morrocco and Suez-Haifa-Gaza. After the Marine Corps, he attended the University of Miami in Miami, Fla. He was an avid soccer coach and fan and was affiliated with the Hudson United Football Club, Hudson County, as an owner and coach and was a varsity soccer coach at Marist High School, Bayonne. Known as “Cos”, he had a passion for history, trivia, literature and music and would often keep everyone entertained for hours with his knowledge, humor and wit. He was a larger than life personality to his many friends. Robert was the grandson of Dr. Samuel A. Cosgrove, MD, who was the Medical Director of The Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, and the son of Dr. Robert A. Cosgrove, MD who was an attending physician at The Margaret Hague. Robert was a lifelong resident of Jersey City before moving to Brielle in 2001. He was predeceased by his parents Dr. Robert A. and Grace Byrnes Cosgrove, his two sisters Rhomelia and Rosemary Cosgrove, and his companion Marlene Schiffman. He is survived by his son Marc A. Cosgrove and his aunt Blanche Byrnes, both of Jersey City; his brother Richard Cosgrove and wife Loretta of Tucson, Ariz; his two nieces Rosemary Cosgrove-Aguilar and Elizabeth Broadfoot, and his two nephews Joseph and David Cosgrove.
