Arrest in shooting of teen; 7th homicide in JC

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Wednesday that an arrest was made in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old Jersey City teen.
Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said Tashawn Holmes, 18, was arrested Wednesday morning by officers of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department at an apartment building on Bergen Avenue in Jersey City.
DeFazio said Pedro Roman Jr. of Bartholdi Avenue was shot Tuesday afternoon after a confrontation with two other teens at around 3 p.m. in Ferris Triangle Park on the corner of Old Bergen Road and Bartholdi Avenue. DeFazio said Holmes is alleged to have been the shooter.
DeFazio said the alleged shooting may have stemmed from a prior dispute.
DeFazio said Holmes is changed with murder and related weapons offenses. A $1 million bail was set for Holmes after he made an appearance in front of state Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan Wednesday afternoon.
Roman’s death is the seventh homicide in Jersey City so far this year, according to DeFazio, with six committed by handgun.
DeFazio said that a second suspect in Roman’s case is still at large and the gun used to shoot Roman has not been recovered. Anyone with information on Roman’s killing should call the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345. – Ricardo Kaulessar
