Board of Education election Tuesday
The Jersey City Board of Education election is taking place on Tuesday, April 21 from 2 to 9 p.m.
The incumbents running to be on the nine-member board are Anthony Cucci and William DeRosa, while board member Edward Cheatam has chosen not to run for another term. Also running for the three seats are Sean Connors, Khaled Dardir, Eric Goldsmith, Mario Gonzalez, Charles W. Johnson, Abdul J. Malik, Azam A. Riaz, Moshe Rozenblit, Patricia Sebron, and Tom Wilen.
What makes this election interesting is that on the same day, the public can vote for the first time in 20 years to approve the local tax portion of the district’s $629.8 million budget. They will be voting on the $93 million tax levy.
Earth Day celebration at cemetery
T he Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery, 435 Newark Ave. in Jersey City, will hold an Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It will be the cemetery’s first “Celebration of Mother Earth,” featuring planting and landscaping activities, a “How to build a Compost” demonstration, live music, contests, and face painting and balloons for the kids.
Admission is free, but donations to support the Cemetery Restoration Fund are appreciated.

Special film screening at Loew’s Theater
The 1968 movie “The Lion in Winter” will be presented at Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre, 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, on Friday, April 24 at 8 p.m.
The screening of the only known surviving 35 mm print of the Academy Award-winning movie, starring Peter O’ Toole and Katherine Hepburn and featuring a young Anthony Hopkins, will be hosted by its director Anthony Harvey. The movie is about England’s King Henry II and his battles with his estranged wife, three sons, and a French king in the year 1183.
After the screening, Mr. Harvey will be interviewed on stage by Foster Hirsch, Professor of Film at Brooklyn College. There will also be a Q&A with the audience.
Admission for the screening, interview and Q&A is $7 for adults, and $5 for seniors (65 ) and children (12 and younger).

City sponsors spring cleaning
The Jersey City Economic Development Corporation (JCEDC) is sponsoring a spring cleaning and a home renovation demonstration on Saturday, April 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Astor Place and Park Street in Jersey City.
Also, JCEDC staff will be on hand to sign up income-qualified home owners for a free home renovation.

Feast on some poetry at upcoming conference
The Celebrant Foundation and Institute’s Collective Wisdom Poetry Feast-ival will take place on Saturday, May 2 at the Hyatt Hotel on the Hudson River in Jersey City, from 3 to 6 p.m.
Open to the public, the readings and buffet are $20.
The Celebrant Foundation and Institute, a 501C3 educational organization located in Montclair, are the organizers of this annual “Collective Wisdom” conference entitled “Poetry Feast-ival.” Seven seasoned Celebrant ritual makers will each discuss poetry in ceremony as it pays tribute to people’s lives and life on planet earth. Several readings and a light buffet will follow.
