Storefront and cars paintballed
Police found a storefront and 12 cars paintballed last week, but were unable to pinpoint any suspects.
At 9:23 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, police were dispatched to Park Avenue between 12th and 13th streets in response to calls of vandalism. Officers found that a storefront window at 1200 Park Ave. had been splattered with a barrage of white paintballs, according to Captain Anthony Falco.
While searching the block, police found 12 vehicles that had also been paintballed on the driver’s side windows, he said. Police were unable to find any suspects in the area and received no further calls about the incident.
The storefront, Creative Groove Studios, had campaign posters for school board candidates hanging in the window, but without suspects – and with a seemingly random line of cars paintballed – police could not make any connection.
Coulda been a contenda
A young man allegedly tore gate doors off the hinges at Elysian Park, 10th and Hudson streets, on Friday, April 3, police said.
Police were dispatched to the park at 3:04 p.m. after receiving a complaint that someone was damaging property. They found two men exiting the park.
Police said one, William Cordero, 20, North Bergen, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Police found the unhinged gate and were placing Cordero – who fit witness descriptions – under arrest when he allegedly lunged for his backpack in an attempt to flee the scene, Falco said.
Police wrestled the young man to the ground and subdued him before charging him with criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and consumption of alcohol under-age. The other man at the scene was not charged. Police said city officials estimated the damage at $800.
Shrimplifting
An employee caught a woman allegedly stealing frozen shrimp from the Shop Rite, 900 Madison St., on Sunday, April 5. Police arrived at the scene at 6:30 p.m. and were told by the employee, a loss prevention officer for the store, the woman had allegedly tried to conceal two bags of frozen shrimp, totaling $16.12, inside grocery bags containing already purchased items.
The employee stopped the woman after she passed by the cash registers, allegedly without paying for the shrimp.
Police charged Debbie Jones, 44, 500 block of Marshall Drive, with shoplifting.
