Dear Editor:
Each succeeding week brings new political assaults on the President from opposition forces but I would remind them that George Herbert Walker Bush was successful in the Persian Gulf War only to have America fall into an economic recession, and William Clinton, after winning the passage of a measure to reduce the federal budget deficit, became subject to a charge of giving false testimony in his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. George Walker Bush was originally hailed as a symbol of courageous leadership after the World Trade Center attack but later suffered harsh criticism for his lack of business regulations and the continuing Iraq War, and Ronald Reagan enacted a program of large scale tax cuts and a major defense buildup but sold weapons through Israeli brokers to Iran in exchange for the release of United States hostages being held in Lebanon with some of the money diverted to the Nicaraguan contras.
These facts are stated to indicate that notwithstanding the successes and failures of former Presidents, they were permitted by the opposition party to enjoy a short period of time so that they could initiate their agenda before being judged.
At the present time, President Barack Obama is being faulted by conservative forces before he has been given a chance to show the results of the moves that he is making. Perhaps the accelerated pace of his schedule in contrast to the sluggish rate of Republican administrators is the reason for opposition hostility. The President’s critics seem to be intent on discrediting him without allowing him the opportunity to show that he could be right, and they could be wrong. It is as if they are afraid that he will be successful thereby depriving them of credibility.
Their paltry attempts to disparage him lead only to their own degradation.
