I will fight against children becoming homeless in our state

Dear Editor:
Recently a report was released by the National Center on Family Homelessness which indicated that one of every 50 American children experiences homelessness. Furthermore the report expressed that most states do not have adequate plans to address this problem. As it is evident that the country is enduring a difficult economic climate, government should ensure that homeless prevention is a priority for our children.
While social programs are being slashed to balance government budgets, after review of the numbers that were compiled by the referenced study, it is imperative that initiatives which prevent child homeless remain operational.
As an active proponent of the prevention of child displacement, I am proud to be a supporter of bill S2354 which permits counties to create Homelessness Trust Funds. This legislation also works to both create and sustain programs which discourage homelessness by offering rental assistance and affordable housing programs. It is my contention that preventative measures will better serve struggling families than trying to assist when a once solvable situation turns grim.
The report conveys that homeless children are far more likely than other children to experience hunger, suffer chronic health problems and fail in school. While the effects of being without stable living quarters seem obvious, clearly not enough has been done to prevent such hardship.
During this budget season, in voicing the needs of residents, I will be certain to fight for measures that will work against children becoming homeless in our State.

Sincerely,
Brian P. Stack
State Senator
