Hoboken gov’t housing should help Joan (and Sugar), not those who don’t need it

Dear Editor:
Thank you for publishing “Travels with Sugar” by Caren Matzner in your 3/15 issue. I have often seen Joan with her white cat that she obviously loves so much. I wondered what had brought them there and worried for them, and I didn’t know how to help.
Thanks to you, I will reach out to her the next time I see her.
Like so many other Hoboken taxpayers, I am outraged by the fiscal abuse of our money by our elected officials. And when I read about someone like Joan, a working neighbor who is down on her luck and trying to do the best she can in tough times, I have to ask why she has to live on the streets when my tax money supports a public housing system that has failed to reach out to her.
We all know of some individuals who already reside in these apartments with questionable merits. It seems that we should at least allow for a deserving community member like Joan to take advantage of affordable housing and rediscover a stable life rather than force her to waste her precious wages on occasional hotel stays.
At the very least, can we all contact our council representatives to try to make this happen for her? I would like for one happy story to emerge from City Hall right now!
And please let us know in a follow-up story how we may further help Joan and others like her.

Thank you.
