Today was the filing deadline for those wanting to run in the Hoboken and Jersey City municipal elections on May 12.
In Hoboken, six people have filed to run for mayor: Council people Beth Mason, Peter Cammarano, and Dawn Zimmer, along with independents Frank Orsini, Tom Vincent, and Ryn Melberg. All have already have been mentioned here except Melberg, a local Democratic political activist.
Mason, Cammarano, and Zimmer recently announced the slates of three council-at-large candidates running with them (click on “More up to the minute news” below to read about those announcements.) But four independent council candidates also filed to run for those seats today.
They are former Fire Chief Richard Trimitiedi; Patricia Waiters, Dave Carty, and Christopher Carbine.
Scott DeLea of the Hoboken Revolt tax group decided not to run, after saying earlier this year that he might.
In a letter submitted this afternoon, he explained, “After careful consideration, I have decided I can best help our community by not seeking elected office at this time. Instead, I will continue to work with the various community groups I am involved with to bring about much-needed change.
“Our great City is being confronted with extraordinary challenges. Our residents are losing their jobs, housing values have plummeted, and homeowners have been saddled with a 47% property tax increase. As a founding member of both Hoboken Revolt and LowerHobokenTaxes.com (which have collectively grown to over 1,700 members), I am proud of the progress we have made in pressuring city hall to change their wasteful ways…”
