Sunburned on GHB, allegedly
A man who dozed off on a tanning bed was arrested for allegedly being under the influence last week, police said.
On Wednesday, March 4, police charged James Rice, 24, of Norwood, N.J., of allegedly being under the influence of a dangerous controlled substance when he was found unresponsive in a tanning bed by an employee at Beach Bum Tanning, 114 Sinatra Drive. The employee went in to check on Rice because he had been in the bed for fifteen minutes after his session expired, the employee told police.
Officers were dispatched to the scene at 8:03 p.m. to find Rice slumped over in a chair, said Police Captain Anthony Falco. The employee told police that when Rice finally woke up, he was agitated, then irate and he couldn’t communicate properly. He then left the tanning bed, gagged, and vomited, the employee told police.
Police tried to engage Rice when they arrived, but he was again unresponsive; the officers called for an ambulance to transport him to Hoboken University Medical Center.
At the hospital, Rice underwent a drug screen that allegedly showed he was under the influence of gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, or GHB, sometimes referred to as “the date rape drug,” police said.
Smack in the middle of the floor
Police were called to the 1300 block of Washington Street last week and found a man in his apartment on his back on the floor. Officers found him unresponsive, but breathing, Police Captain Anthony Falco said.
Known associates in the area told police the man was Richard Smith, 57. They also told police they weren’t sure whether he was on any medication at the time, Falco said.
Officers searched Smith’s bedroom and reported they allegedly found a syringe and needle, a spoon, and a tourniquet, and what they believed to be heroin residue.
Smith was charged with being under the influence of a dangerous controlled substance, according to police.
A big purse?
A woman was charged with shoplifting last week after allegedly filling her purse in a food store.
Police responded to a call at the Shop Rite last Wednesday at 10:37 a.m. Store employees told police that they saw Justine Miles, 24, Hoboken, allegedly filling her pocketbook with goods and leaving without paying.
The goods totaled $100.30, store employees told police.
Miles had an outstanding warrant in Jersey City for a failure to appear in court, Police Captain Anthony Falco said, and she was charged with shoplifting.
