What did I do wrong?

Dear Editor:
Recently my wife and I both received parking tickets for parking near the bus stop on Blvd. East and 49th St. southbound. I say “near” the bus stop because neither of us actually thought we were close enough to be ticketed.
The bus stop, for starters, is extremely poorly marked. There is no arrow on the sign pointing which side you’re not allowed to park on. Obviously, though, the stop is in front of the sign, since that is where the curb is painted yellow and where the waiting bench is. I, on the other hand was parked behind the sign, 33 feet behind the sign. In fact, my front bumper ended eight feet behind another sign that says parking is allowed for Weehawken residents only.
So maybe I am in the wrong, and I really did disobey a regulation. I would just appreciate it if it were a little more clear what I did wrong!
