Students at WNY Catholic school told it’s closing

St. Joseph of the Palisades High School in West New York will close at the end of this school year due to decreasing enrollment numbers and the economy’s effect on scholarships and donations, said Development Director David Heatherington.
He said the students were told this morning, and that many appeared heartbroken.
“The kids love this place,” said Heatherington, “and I think they might not have realized how much they loved it until they heard it is going.”
Archbishop John J. Myers of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark granted permission for the closing in a Feb. 13 letter to Rev. Gregory Studerus of the Church of St. Joseph of the Palisades.
Heatherington said the school would need $1.5 million to stay open.
