LEECH, RICHARD

LEECH, RICHARD. Private funeral services were held for Richard Leech, 88, a lifelong resident of Weehawken and decorated U.S Marine veteran of World War II. He died Jan.19. He was the son of Charles Leech, Mayor of Weehawken in the 1920’s, and Johanna Schultz. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. after Pearl Harbor and became a member of the First Marine Division that launched the invasion of Guadalcanal. When his unit was left behind by retreating U.S troops, with only four days of ammunition and 17 days of rations, the surviving band of starving Marines harassed and eluded the Japanese garrison for several months until reinforcements arrived. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in this action. After the war, he was an expert in color printing on a large scale, and spent his career working for several of the largest NYC based advertising agencies as Director of Print Production. He retired from the American Management Association in 1986, during which time he had also been a member of the US Postal Commission. He was a member the Euclid Lodge No. 136 of the Masonic Order for 53 years. He is survived by his son Richard A. Leech, of Englewood.
