“Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested, we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back, nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.”
As President Barack Obama spoke these words on Tuesday, children, parents, and staff members from the Elysian Charter School sat rapt before erupting in cheers. They watched the inauguration on TV in the hall of Our Lady of Grace with food, song, and a general sense of change in the air, mirroring the campaign mantra of the 44th president.
Principal Carol Stock said the event was organized after a parent asked if the school could take the children to Washington, D.C.
With almost 400 people gathered in the hall, the inaugural address was shown on a big screen. The children sang “This Land is Our Land” and the “Star Spangled Banner” using song sheets.
“It was a wonderful thing to share,” Stock said.
