TASTY TIDBITS Glover football camp set New grid coach at Weehawken; District 7 tourney underway

Jersey City football legend Rich Glover, the former Outland Trophy winner, two-time All-American and member of the College Football Hall of Fame and currently the head coach at Dickinson High School, will hold his annual football camp from July 8-10 at the soccer field down at Caven Point in Jersey City.

The camp is free and sponsored by the Rich Glover Foundation and the Jersey City Department of Recreation. It will run daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature several aspects of the fundamentals in football for kids ages 7 through 14.

Any interested participant can show up at the site at 9:45 each morning to register. Participants are asked to bring cleats if they have them and wear shorts. For more information, contact Glover at (201) 284-8674…

Weehawken High School has a new football coach. It is Chris Johnsen, who has spent several years as an assistant coach at Snyder, Marist, and most recently Queen of Peace. Johnsen is young, eager and hard working, maybe the best news for the Weehawken grid program…

The District 7 Little League 12-year-old All-Star tourney is underway throughout the county and we’ll have more on the tourney next week. It’s always a good way to see the stars of tomorrow today. The talent level is always excellent in this tourney. The images of future Rutgers hoop star Mike Rosario hitting homers for Lincoln Park Little League when that great league won the District 7 for the first time six years ago are still fresh and seeing Abel Blanco, the Memorial baseball star, pitch for the West New York All-Stars, was something else to remember.

It’s a great chance to get to see these talented youngsters before they move on to high school baseball…
