Former Memorial standout Castano pitching ace at MSU Inhulsen, Castro hurl big games locally; honors for Weehawken’s Gadaleta >

After a brilliant high school career that saw him get named as the first-ever two-time Hudson Reporter Most Valuable Player in baseball, former Memorial High School standout Jesus Castano has continued his brilliance on to the collegiate level at Montclair State University.

Last week, the right-handed Castano was named as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.

Castano threw eight scoreless innings in two appearances last week, picking up his team-leading fifth victory in the process.

After a tossing scoreless inning versus Kean, Castano went seven shutout innings allowing three hits with the five strikeouts and three walks as MSU blanked William Paterson, 6-0 in the opener of an NJAC doubleheader last Saturday. It pushed Castano’s numbers to 5-1 on the season with a 3.55 earned run average.

Throughout last season, it was said here that major league baseball scouts missed the boat on Castano, that he had all the makings of being a player that should have earned a call on draft day.

Castano is proving that he is a big-time talent and will certainly be a candidate for the MLB draft the next time he’s eligible in two years….

Locally, there have been some solid performances of late on the baseball diamond, worthy in other weeks of Athlete of the Week accolades, only overshadowed this week by the brilliance of North Bergen’s Damien Seguen.

First, Emerson’s talented senior pitcher/third baseman Yoken Castro’s performance against Bayonne might have flown under the radar, but not here. Castro fired a no-hitter against the bombastic Bees, striking out 11 in the process. It was the last time that Bayonne lost, because the Bees have rolled off six straight since the Castro no-no.

Castro has also been swinging a torrid bat, causing some local followers to believe that he might get a call from the major league baseball scouts during the draft that takes place on the first Tuesday in June…

Hoboken’s Devon Inhulsen has also been impressive of late, leading the Red Wings to the top of the standings in the HCIAA Seglio Division. Inhulsen fired a pitching gem against closest Seglio rival St. Mary’s, shutting out the Ramblers on three hits, then showing his hitting prowess by delivering a homer against High Tech, three hits and two RBI vs. Emerson and a triple and three runs scored against St. Joseph of the Palisades.

Inhulsen is definitely having an All-County type season for the Red Wings…

Finally, the success of Hudson Catholic with rookie head coach Danny Suarez cannot go by unnoticed. Neither can the pitching/hitting performances of junior righty Robert “Hammer” Doughty, who is one of the best two-way performers the school has produced in a long time.

Everyone who is around the kid says that not only is Doughty a super talent, but he’s an even nicer kid, which is good news to report…

By the way, if North Bergen continues to get a solid 1-2 pitching performance from Seguen and Jules Diaz, the Bruins are going to be very tough to beat come playoff time. Incredibly, both pitchers got their starts at Hudson Catholic and transferred back home to North Bergen…

It’s safe to say that no one is questioning the talents of High Tech freshman softball sensation Erica Colon anymore. Colon struck out 11 and allowed just four hits in a win over previously undefeated and defending HCIAA Coviello champion Holy Family Academy last week, after beating Port Jervis (N.Y.) and St. Dominic Academy last Saturday in the SDA Invitational, firing two shutout wins. Colon is definitely the real deal…

Congrats to Weehawken girls’ basketball coach Sandra Gadaleta on two counts. First, she shared the BCSL National Coach of the Year honors with Secaucus’ Cheryl Bott. Next, she recently announced that she’s now engaged to be married. It’s a special year for Gadaleta….

Congrats to Hoboken football coach Lou Taglieri and his wife, Gabriela, on the birth of their son, Trey Anthony Taglieri, born April 11, weighing seven pounds and 10 ounces. It’s safe to say that young Trey will be made into a quarterback like the old man…

Alice Schmidt DeFazio has received word that she will be named the new athletic director at New Jersey City University when long-time AD Larry Schiner retires at the end of the year. That’s great news for Alice, who has paid her dues and deserves her shot at running the Gothic Knight program.
