HOSPITALS & HEALTH SERVICES

Jersey City Medical Center, 355 Grand St., (201) 915-2000, www.libertyhealth.org. The medical center is the region’s level II trauma center with the only neonatal intensive care unit in the region. The medical center provides emergency services to all of Hudson County and is home to the Children’s Hospital of Hudson County. It offers a number of medical services, translation services for 64 languages, gift shop, regular and handicapped parking. For the Children’s Hospital, call (201) 915-2455.

Greenville Hospital Campus, 1825 Kennedy Blvd., (201) 547-6100, www.libertyhealth.org. Part of Liberty Health Care, the hospital offers a number of medical services, translation services and gift shop. Parking is available after 5 p.m. in the emergency room parking lot off Kennedy Boulevard.

Christ Hospital, 176 Palisade Ave., (201) 795-8200, www.christhospital.org. Founded in 1874, Christ Hospital is a 402-bed acute care medical and surgical hospital with specialties in emergency medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, obstetrics, surgery and psychiatric care. Christ Hospital is the oncology center of Hudson County and operates the Harwood Heart Center. Parking is available next to the doctors’ building on Palisade Avenue.

Health and Human Services, 201 Cornelison Ave., (201) 547-6800. Provides a variety of medical and counseling services. Call every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jersey City Family Health Center, 935 Garfield Ave., (201) 946-6400, www.libertyhealth.org. Specializing in out-patient pediatric care, as well as other health care services. Also, offers the Navigator Program – a translation service for patients who don’t speak English.

Columbus Health Center, 115 Christopher Columbus Dr., (201) 432-4600, www.libertyhealth.org. Provides outpatient health care in general medicine to men and women, and includes a pediatric and adult dentistry service.

ANIMAL SERVICES

Animal Control, 586 Newark Ave., (201) 547-4888, www.cityofjerseycity.com. Available for animal complaints, dog licenses or other animal-related services. Open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., open for payments from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Closed weekends.

Liberty Humane Society , 235 Jersey City Blvd., (201) 547-4147, www.libertyhumane.org. Depending on space, the shelter takes in strays and pets surrendered by owners, and provides low-cost neutering for cats and dogs. Before adoption, the shelter vaccinates, neuters and spays all animals. Also, free dog food is available to Jersey City residents. Open Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., all other days including weekends open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adoption hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, all other days including weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), 480 Johnson Ave., (201) 435-3557. The shelter only takes in animals surrendered by their owners. With mostly cats and dogs, the shelter also has animals for adoption. Complaints of animal cruelty can be reported to the shelter, which will take the proper steps to resolve the problem. For more information, call Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.

RECREATION & CULTURAL AFFAIRS

Cultural Affairs, 280 Grove St., (201) 547-6921, www.cityofjerseycity.com. Offers information on cultural events taking place in Jersey City. A calendar of summer events, including street fairs, festivals and other activities will be available starting May. All registered voters receive a copy of the calendar by mail. Open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

JERSEY CITY INCINERATOR AUTHORITY

501 Rt. 440, (201) 432-4645, www.jciaonline.org. Incinerator Authority offers a number of services, such as garbage pick-up, recycling, environmental services and more.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Monday and Thursday, Hudson City area: East of Central Avenue to Paterson Plank Road (between the depressed highway and Jersey City/Union City line). Bergen section: East of Cornelison Avenue between Lexington and Highland avenues. Downtown: East of Cornelison Avenue to the Hudson River and the residential area between Christopher Columbus Drive and the Light Rail R/R cut Lafayette Section. Also, the Country Village area.

Tuesday and Friday, Hudson City area: Central Avenue West to Tonnele Avenue between Secaucus Road (Eighth Street) and the depressed highway. Downtown: East of the NJ Turnpike Extension to the Hudson River between Newark Avenue and the Jersey City/Hoboken line. Bergen and Greenville area: East of West Side and Garfield avenues between Bramhall and Bayview avenues.

Wednesday and Saturday, Westside and Greenville area: West Side Avenue and east to Ocean Avenue between Audubon and Danforth avenues. Greenville: East of Country Village to Princeton Avenue between Danforth Avenue and the Jersey City/Bayonne line. Westside and Marion area: West Side Avenue and west to Rt. 440 and U.S. 1 & 9 between Fisk and Van Reypen streets. Journal Square area: West Side Avenue and east to Waldo Avenue between Montgomery Street and depressed highway. Also, all of Tonnele Avenue.

REGULAR RECYCLING

Paper and Container Collection, Curbside collection, Newspapers and other paper items should be stacked and tied with some kind of string for curbside pick-up. Glass, cans, plastics, milk, juice containers and drink boxes can all be placed in one large reusable container during regular recycling collection.

Monday, West Zone: Collection will be made at Rt. 440 east to Garfield Avenue; from Fisk Street and Audubon and Bayview avenues north to Lexington and Bramhall avenues and Grand and Harmon streets; Rt. 440 east to West Side Avenue, from Lexington to Highland Avenues; and from Mercer Street north to Rt. 139 (Observer Highway).

Tuesday, South Zone: Collection will be made at Rt. 440 east to Princeton and Garfield avenues, from Bayonne City Line north to Carbon Place, Stegman Parkway and Bidwell Avenue.

Wednesday, North Zone: Collection will be made at Tonnelle Avenue east to Paterson Plank Road, from Rt. 139 (Observer Highway) to the Union City line.

Friday, East Zone: Collection will be made at West Side Avenue, from Oxford Avenue north to Glenwood Avenue, east; Hudson River west to Garfield and Baldwin avenues, from Morris Pesin Drive to the Hoboken city line.

SPECIAL RECYCLING

Recycling Materials, The Jersey City Incinerator Authority is now accepting cellular phones and accessories, PDAs, pagers, two-way radios, ink and laser cartridges. Available free to all residents with proof of residency, such as driver’s license, utility or telephone bills. Between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., on weekends call (201) 432-4645, ext. 614 for further instructions.

Appliance Recyclables, Items to be recycled here include refrigerators and air conditioners which can release ozone-destroying chemicals called CFSs during repair and disposal. For child safety, remove all doors from refrigerators. Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call (201) 432-4645, ext. 600 for an appointment.

Recycling Wood Items, Jersey City Division of Park Maintenance, (201) 547-4449, www.jciaonline.org. Wood items for recycling must be clean, untreated, unpainted lumber and tree parts no longer than four feet. Any tree parts shorter than four feet can be left for curbside collection on Wednesday. Call for appointment.

Mechanical Street Sweeping, Jersey City Incinerator Authority, 501 Rt. 440, (201) 432-4645, ext. 675, www.jciaonline.org. Street sweeping on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for side streets, and Wednesday and Saturday sweeping on main streets. Street sweeping lasts for two hours. Call for exact times and locations.

Street Repair, 575 Rt. 440, (201) 547-4432. Offers repairs on pot holes, street names and traffic signs, and other street-related repairs. Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

PARKING AUTHORITY

Parking Authority Headquarters, 394 Central Ave., (201) 653-6969. Parking authority provides zone parking permits, construction site and “No parking” signs, meter bags, commercial vehicle parking permits, supervision during movie shoots, snow removal and other services. Meters, Parking Authority, 394 Central Ave., (201) 653-6969. Meters operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Meters are suspended on Sundays and holidays.

PATH Train Station, Four locations, (800) 234-7284, www.panynj.gov/path. One-way PATH fares are $1.50, round-trip $3. PATH provides train and subway services throughout New Jersey and New York City. PATH locations in Jersey City are: Pavonia/Newport (110 Pavonia Ave. E.); Exchange Place (1 Exchange Pl.); Grove Street (326 Grove St.); and Journal Square.

NY Waterway, (800) 53-FERRY, www.nywaterway.com. Ferry service to Manhattan from five locations in Jersey City to Downtown and Midtown Manhattan. Ferry locations are Newport, Harborside, Colgate, Liberty Harbor and Port Liberte. NY Waterway also offers special sightseeing cruises.
