A lot has happened since last we spoke. ECW “One Night Stand” took place, the first ECW show on Sci-Fi took place, and TNA “Slammiversary” has gone down. Now let us pick up the pieces and see where the wrestling cards lie. ECW was a success with the first TV show getting a 2.7 rating.The fans were not too happy with the initial product because of too much WWE involvement, but it was necessary to get the WWE audience to care about ECW. Now look for the WWE to fade away on the ECW brand, and for it to become its own niche. The whole concept behind the ECW brand is that it will be different from everything else you see on TV.
The initial plan was for John Cena to become a heel. That has been scrapped as of now, according to sources. The WWE has a movie starring John Cena coming out in the next six months and it has decided that it would be impossible to push it as Cena being the bad guy.
Kane has recently come up in retirement rumors according to back stage rumors. Supposedly he is looking to hang the boots up in the next six to 12 months. Incredibly, he signed a two-picture deal with the WWE and will be making “See No Evil” part II in the next year, so wrestling is no longer his only income.
TNA has made an initial money offer to Bill Goldberg. The first round of negotiations was not to Goldberg’s likings, but look for the big man to end up in TNA by the end of the year. A rumored move to prime time TV will help lean him toward signing. Goldberg has a genuine hate for the WWE and would love to take some ratings away from them. Kevin Nash is happy in TNA and TNA is happy with Kevin Nash. Now completely healthy, Nash has become a pivotal part of TNA’s future once again. There has been no word on the whereabouts of Nash’s friend Scott Hall. According to sources, he is looking into making another in-the-ring comeback.
DX has returned, but do the fans really care? That is the question facing WWE writers. The thing about DX that worked was the genuinely funny storylines that entertained fans from week to week. The Sixshooter highly doubts any writer that thinks the Spirit Squad is a good idea can make this concept work.
Umaga…enough said…that guy is a waste of time and space. Yes WWE, I know it is Rosey from “3-Minute Warning.” He’s not an imposing figure, so drop this terrible gimmick already. Put him with Eugene and make him a mockery already, we know that is inevitable at this point.
TNA had its own ECW moment a couple weeks ago in the famous “Bingo Hall” in Philadelphia. Spike Dudley and Rhino both tore up their WWE contract offers for “One Night Stand” in front of a capacity crowd. The WWE had plans for Rhino to be a big shot in ECW, but he decided on staying put with TNA and signing a new two-year deal. As for Dudley, he was slated to get destroyed by the Big Show…good decision not going back.
Scott Steiner has been a good samaritan with TNA, and the higher-ups have taken notice. Look for Steiner to sign a long-term deal in the next couple of months. It is nice to see Steiner motivated and having fun wrestling again. This is a long way from his one-year feud with the talentless Test in the WWE.
Look for Stone Cold to be in a new WWE-produced movie next year. Stone Cold’s film is shooting right now and should be ready come next summer. As for a return to the ring, do not hold your breath. Stone Cold considers himself retired. As does the Rock. Chris Jericho and TNA’s Christian can be seen in the new Clive Owen picture called “Shoot ‘Em Up.” The movie also stars Paul Giamatti, and is about a hitman that finds his heart trying to protect a newborn infant. Word on the street is that this one is going to be pretty big.
