Dear Editor:
I am looking for Johnny and June Carter Cash fans. Former Postmaster General Marvin Runyun announced on the Grand Ole Opry on September 13, 2003 that he would recommend a stamp be issued for Johnny and June. Well I think that we the fans should help the postal service make their decision to issue a stamp for them.
I did a project on Hank Williams, Sr. on a stamp. That stamp was issued June 10, 1993.
John and June were soul mates. They were married for 35 years. They did everything together. They were honest people who believed in helping others. They got their strength from their strong belief in God. Johnny was known as the “man in black”. He wore black for so many reasons like the homeless, hungry, mistreated prisoners and many other worthy causes. Just listen to the song “Man in Black” to find out what Johnny stood for.
June Carter Cash died May 15, 2003. John Cash died September 12, 2003. They are greatly missed. June was a member of the first family of country music, “The Carter Family.” Her mother was Mother Maybelle Carter. June started entertaining at a very young age. She entertained us until the day she died. Her last video was “Keep on the Sunnyside.” June and her dear friend, Merle Kilgore, wrote “Ring of Fire” which was her love song to Johnny Cash who recorded 17.
Johnny is in both the County Music Hall of Fame (1980) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992). His last video “Hurt” won three ACM awards on November 5, 2003 and was voted Video of the Year.
Everyone loved John and June so much. They made such great music together like “Jackson” and “If I Were a Carpenter”. June sang on most of John’s records.
I believe that John and June should be on a U.S. Commemorative Stamp. They gave us great music and entertained us. Roseanne Cash said that her father and June would love tributes that included the fans. Well, this tribute is done by the fans.
Please let everyone you know know about this project. I would love to add your name to my list of supporters. Please send your letters of support for Johnny and June Carter Cash to Cathy Malfatti, 1419 47th St., Eureka, CA 95501 or P.O. Box 3443, Eureka, CA 95502.
Thanks for your time and consideration. Cathy Malfatti
