BIG BAND Believe it or not, these are just some of the members of Burnt Sugar, an improvisational world-music group that will be performing next Thursday, July 22, at Sounds of the City at the NJPAC in Newark. The band – which includes as many as 27 musicians – features bassist Jared Nickerson (back row, far right) of Hoboken, while the rest hail from the five boroughs of New York City. Burnt Sugar was started by Greg Tate, a writer for The Village Voice. The free outdoor concert begins at 5 p.m. with a performance by North Bergen’s own Marta Gomez, a Colombian folk/jazz musician. Jersey City artist Jessica Lenard has a monoprint on display at the Center Gallery at the Old Church Cultural Center in Demarest. Schola Cantorum on Hudson, a 30-voice choral ensemble based in northern New Jersey, will host its sixth annual Midsummer Night’s Open Sing on Wednesday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. The open sing will be held at Saints Peter and Paul R.C. Church, located at 404 Hudson St. in Hoboken. The event is a rehearsal and “performance” of a major, beloved choral work in one evening. Union City’s Café and Orquidea, a Colombian folkloric group, will perform this Thursday, July 15, in conjunction with the Colombian Independence Festival. Café and Orquidea’s performances combine Colombian folkloric dance with poetry, music, and skits.
